A Classic Triple - November 2008

BEETHOVEN: Concerto for Violin, Violoncello and Fortepiano in C major, Op. 56 Symphony No. 88 in G major MOZART: Symphony No. 35 in D major, KV 385 “Haffner”
Nicholas McGegan, conductor Colin Jacobsen, violin Tanya Tomkins, violoncello Eric Zivian, fortepiano
"Though Beethoven is often thought of as an overly serious composer, his Triple Concerto shows him in entertainment mode, with subtlety and humor that reveals itself most clearly when performed on gut strings. The piece was written for the virtuoso Anton Kraft, leaving Beethoven unrestricted by any technical limitations. The part for the cellist is like climbing Mt. Everest, and without an end-pin, it would be like climbing Everest in high-heels. I am not sure whether I'll make the climb in high heels (with the end-pin) or hiking boots (without the end-pin), but either way, I'm looking forward to the adventure!"
