Paul Sugarman spent 25 of the first 28 years of his life on the East Coast, with a three-year detour to Ethiopia, where he served as a Peace Corps volunteer teaching English as a Second Language and (in his final year) ESL pedagogy. He moved to San Francisco in 1975 for a one-year judicial clerkship following graduation from law school, and never left. He worked for the private law firm, Heller Ehrman, LLP, where he specialized in complex commercial litigation.
Other volunteer activities: Berkeley Opera (board member, 2007 to present). Congregation Beth El of Berkeley (board member, 1990-1994 and 1997-2005; vice president, 1997-2005; executive committee, 1997-2005; chair of capital campaign, 1998-2005).
