Paul Sugarman spent 25 of the first 28 years of his life on the East Coast, with a three-year detour to Ethiopia, where he served as a Peace Corps volunteer teaching English as a Second Language and (in his final year) ESL pedagogy. He moved to San Francisco in 1975 for a one-year judicial clerkship following graduation from law school, and never left. He worked for the private law firm, Heller Ehrman, LLP, where he specialized in complex commercial litigation.
